Cavite women get equipped to stop child sexual abuse

Volunteers get equipped to stop child sexual abuse in their community

It was one of those mornings when we simply confirmed that this is what God wanted us to do – go to poor communities and train leaders on how to prevent child sexual abuse (CSA).

We trained the volunteer workers of Home for the 100th Sheep, a ministry led by Kaloi and Edna Ranario that reaches out to the poorest of the poor. Kaloi and Edna run pre-school and day care centers for children who would have no other means of getting any education at all. Kaloi, an accountant by profession, and Edna, a Hongkong-based YWAM educator a few years back, now devote all their time to providing free education to children in slum areas.

On 18 December 2009, I and my husband Pastor Joenard Gallo trained the 21 volunteer educators of the Home on how to prevent child sexual abuse in their community. It was so touching to watch them absorb as much information as they can, because they know of children in their community who have been victims of CSA. They used to feel helpless about it, but now they have enough information to know what to do, who to call and where to go. Having completed the training, they are now members of Keep Them Safe Now, a worldwide movement that we pioneered to stop child sexual abuse.

Many thanks to all the participants, and likewise to my law school classmate, Atty. Helen Tiu, for sponsoring this seminar.
